Tirana International Airport \u201cN\u00ebn\u00eb Tereza\u201d is Albania’s main gateway to the world and aims to become a modern, efficient, and competitive hub in the Balkan region. Located just 17 kilometers from the center of the capital, the terminal is now a symbol of contemporary Albania, where innovation, culture, and national identity come together in a distinctive architectural project.<\/p>\n
A key element of this renovation is the fa\u00e7ade, designed as a large architectural screen that unifies the different phases of the terminal’s expansion. It is a project of great architectural and symbolic significance, aimed at giving the entire airport complex a unified and recognizable identity. In recent years, the airport has seen its passenger numbers grow from 3-4 million to over 10 million per year, a factor that has led to the need to quickly add new pavilions and facilities.<\/p>\n
The new fa\u00e7ade is designed as a metallic \u201cskin\u201d that envelops the entire complex, harmonizing the different buildings and creating a coherent image, evocative of a fortified city that protects and enhances its interior spaces. Made of modular steel panels and glass inserts, the fa\u00e7ade features a pattern of geometric shapes that generate a dynamic visual rhythm. The transparent red triangular inserts add depth and vitality, transforming the surface into a contemporary fabric that filters natural light, creates plays of shadows and reflections, and makes the space below extremely evocative. At night, LED lighting further enhances the metal components and glass \u201cgems,\u201d transforming the fa\u00e7ade into a true work of art.<\/p>\n
From an aesthetic point of view, the design is inspired by the geometric patterns of traditional Albanian carpets and clothing, reinterpreted in a contemporary key. The metal panels, reminiscent of filigree and inlays, evoke local craftsmanship and establish a strong cultural link with the Albanian territory. The monumentality of the fa\u00e7ade, combined with the lightness of the design, conveys a sense of openness and dynamism, transforming the building into an urban landmark, a scenic threshold that welcomes travelers with an identity-defining and recognizable gesture.<\/p>\n
In addition to its architectural value, the project also carefully addresses functional aspects. Beneath the fa\u00e7ade, a two-level underground car park optimizes space organization and traffic flow management: level -1 is for private transport, level -2 for car rental services, while the ground floor houses the taxi and kiss & ride areas, directly in front of the terminal, both protected by a large canopy. Particular attention has been paid to accessibility, with targeted solutions to separate traffic flows, thanks to the introduction of new roundabouts and dedicated ramps, improving circulation and reducing congestion.<\/p>\n
With its new fa\u00e7ade, Tirana Airport is not only expanding its operational capacity but also taking on a new architectural and urban identity, becoming a clear and distinctive symbol of the country.
