In the heart of Florence’s historic center, on the corner of Via dei Cimatori and Via dei Cerchi, a few steps from Dante’s House, Piazza della Signoria, and Palazzo Vecchio, stands the Teatro Nazionale: a place with many layers, founded in the 14th century and transformed over the centuries from a reformatory to a hospital, from the Teatro della Quarconia to the Teatro del Giglio, until it took on its current name. After more than forty years of neglect, the building is now once again an integral part of Florence’s urban and cultural fabric thanks to a complex restoration and enhancement project.<\/p>\n
The restoration, which lasted four years, was based on the principle of strict historical fidelity combined with the need to equip the theater with contemporary infrastructure. The building, which is protected, underwent extensive structural consolidation, including the reconstruction of the floors and roof in accordance with the original geometry, as well as the reproduction of the wooden trusses using traditional techniques. The work restored the theater to its original Italian style, with a horseshoe-shaped stalls area and four tiers of boxes, for a total of about 300 seats, while integrating new-generation technological systems and equipment.<\/p>\n
The stage tower is now equipped with advanced stage technology, including a large automated LED screen and a Dolby Atmosphere audio system, making the hall suitable for innovative performance languages. Particular attention has been paid to the restoration of the 19th-century decorative elements: stucco, gilding, and capitals have been restored using traditional methods, bringing the gilded surfaces and original proportions back into balance with the composition of the hall. New high-performance acoustic carpeting contributes to the sound quality of the environment.<\/p>\n
The building’s systems have also been completely renovated and invisibly integrated into the structure: air conditioning, security, and LED lighting allow for precise control of lighting scenarios, including the reproduction of a \u201cstarry sky\u201d effect. Above the fourth tier of boxes, an event hall with a sliding glass roof has been created, offering a direct view of Florence’s historic monuments.
