On 7 March, the wait for the presentation of the winning project of the international competition for the redevelopment of the Artemio Franchi stadium and the Campo di Marte area came to an end. At the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence, the eight projects that reached the final phase were presented and the winner was unveiled by pairing the projects with the names of the candidates, who challenged each other to rethink an iconic building of architecture and engineering Italian by Pier Luigi Nervi, together with the emblematic surrounding area. The competition had as its key objective the protection, restoration and enhancement of the rationalist architect’s design lines together with that of eliminating the superstructures added over the years, allowing the system to be more functional and harmonious. The candidate projects therefore had the possibility of creating new internal curves, in parallel with the existing ones and eliminating those of the parterre built for the 1990s World Cup in place of the athletics track, while the marathon tower, the helical stairs, the shelter of the tribune of honor and the structural frame formed by the beam-pillar combination, were among the elements of Pier Luigi Nervi’s project to be preserved. The net capacity envisaged for the ‘new’ Franchi is 42500 thousand seats and coverage has been provided for all, in addition, in the call for proposals, there was the possibility for participants to insert spaces for hospitality, lounge areas, skyboxes to an extent. greater than the current one, areas for the press, refreshment points and a restaurant, at least one section of the football museum open to the public every day of the year, as well as a series of commercial activities related to the Fiorentina team, hospitality parking lots , nursery. The Archea Associati studio participated in the tender with a complex project, which responds to various needs on different fronts, placing itself in 4th place. The intent of the project proposed by the Florentine studio was on the one hand, to develop an urban project, which creates a real connection with the nineteenth-century city and which allows the pedestrianization of most of the area, solving accessibility problems, as well as to create new spaces for the community and to recover large areas of the city with urban forestry projects. On the other hand, to propose for the building a structure completely independent from the pre-existing building, with a double structure system, which draws inspiration from the double cap of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore by Filippo Brunelleschi and its vertical connection system. The design concept of the structure was treated as a large architectural sculpture, suspended in its figurative autonomy, absolutely respectful of the Tower of Marathon and the Tribuna d’Onore covered by the great overhang of Nervi. The deadline set for the end of the stadium renovation has been set for 2026, the year in which Fiorentina will celebrate its centenary and which will therefore see the winning project realized.
